Parupu Podi

Parupu podi/dhal powder/spicy lentil powder is a popular and traditional south Indian recipe prepared with lentils rich in protein and with little spices. Parupu podi/dhal powder is served in most of the south Indian restaurants especially in restaurants serving Andhra cuisine and tastes excellent along with the combination of rice and ghee. Adding some sambar or keera parupu kootu/spinach lentil cury with it adds more taste. Parupu podi/dhal powder can be used in podi dosa also. Try this simple and healthy parupu podi recipe and Enjoy Cooking!!!


Toor dal                              1 cup
Moong dal                          1/2 cup
Channa Dal                         1/2 cup
Red Chilli Powder               2 tbsp
Black pepper powder         2 tsp
Asafoetida                          1/2 tsp
Jeera                                  1 tbsp
Salt                                     to taste


1. Dry fry all the dals sepearately until they turn golden brown. Mix well.
2. Add the jeera and asafoetida to the dal mixture when it is still hot and keep aside to cool.
3. Once cool, grind to a course/fine powder depening on preference.
4. Add red chilli powder, pepper and salt to the ground mixture and store in a airtight jar.
